 Our History

Fairfield AD Ltd represents a vision, a means of tackling a problem in such a way that it creates a range of positive outcomes.  As such it has not really moved too far from its routes!

Fairfield AD Ltd developed out of Fairfield Materials Management which developed out of a local group (Fairfield Composting).  Fairfield Composting was shouting about home composting way before anybody else in Greater Manchester, they worked to get low cost compost bins out to residents in Manchester and Oldham to support them to compost their household and garden waste, to keep nutrients in the gardens and to avoid the unnecessary movement of waste from its source.  Val Rawlinson worked full-time as a volunteer on Fairfield Composting, she recognised the need for a compost led solution on New Smithfield Market, convinced the market to support her with a waste audit and recruited Emma Smith to get her hands dirty.

The audit was in January 2002, by July 2003 Fairfield Materials Management was up and running with its very first Vertical Composting Unit (VCU), the following year 2 more units were added and in 2005 the final 3 were installed.  Fairfield Materials Management was then in a position to compost all of the bulk waste generated on the market.  In 2006 Fairfield was the first in-vessel composting business to achieve PAS 100 (quality assurance standard for compost).  Compost is supplied to a range of groups from household through to the Forestry Commission, via a few allotments and parks.
