Frequently Asked Questions

Will it smell?

Fairfield AD will focus on processing waste generated within a local area, for example for LIEP 1 this geographic area would be Greater Manchester.  This focus on local waste minimises the time from waste generation to collection to processing.  This is a key factor for minimising the odour related to food waste.  The process itself operates within a negative pressure building when untreated food waste is in the food reception hall.  Once food waste arrives it is processed immediately, once in a liquid form it is either contained with tanks, pumps or pipework.  There are no odour emissions associated with the material in this state.

How much electricity will it generate?

Fairfield plants will process 20,000 tonnes of food waste per annum; this generates enough electricity to power 500 homes entirely from food waste!
